Sydney Arestivo’s goal with 10:35 remaining in the second half broke a scoreless tie and propelled St. Anthony’s, South Huntington, to a 1-0 victory over Kellenberg Memorial, Uniondale, in the Catholic High School girls’ soccer championship game Nov. 4 at Adelphi University. Goalkeepers Danielle Maurice and Jensen Wiedmer had three saves apiece to preserve the shutout while game MVP Courtney Davis helped contain Firebirds scoring threat Christina Akalski. This was the second straight year St. Anthony’s beat Kellenberg in the finals of the playoffs.
Junior Rosero scored two second-half goals in a span of 2:53 to erase a 1-0 deficit and lead St. John the Baptist, West Islip, to a 3-1 triumph over St. Anthony’s, South Huntington, in the boys’ championship game Nov. 5 at Adelphi. Patrick Rowan’s goal with 20:38 remaining provided the Cougars with an insurance goal. Rosero, who was returning from a left hip injury and sat out the beginning of the game, was named MVP. The title marked St. John the Baptist’s first outright championship since 2001.
