In game 2, St. Dom's Spencer Bilello, below, hits a home run and Chaminade's players celebrate after the final out, above.

Fueled by the strong efforts of its pitching staff and a balanced offensive attack, Chaminade swept St. Dominic in their best-of-three series over the Memorial Day weekend to capture the diocesan CHSAA baseball championship. In Game 1 at New York Tech on May 29, Eric Truss allowed only one earned run in six innings in an 8-2 Flyers’ victory. He scattered four hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter, finishing the season with an 8-0 record. Reliever Adam Schmidt struck out three in the seventh to seal the win. In Game 2 at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School on May 30, Chaminade starter Kevin Weissheier allowed no earned runs in 4 and 1/3 innings, while striking out three and walking four to earn the decision in a 4-2 win. Andy Gallagher, the series’ MVP, picked up the save, getting the Flyers out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the fifth and allowing one hit in 2 and 2/3 innings. Chaminade won 14 of its final 15 games to finish the season 19-4. St. Dominic was 17-6.
