Sister Mary Josephine Gorman, OSU


BLUE POINT — Ursuline Sister Mary Josephine Gorman, 94, died January 2 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.

She entered the congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk on August 15, 1933 and professed her final vows eight years later. She received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Manhattan College.

Sister Josephine ministered for many years as a teacher in Connecticut and the Diocese of Brooklyn, including: Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ozone Park (1938-47); and Our Lady of Grace in Howard Beach (1953-59); she also ministered for several years from 1979-93 at the Stamford Parks and Recreations Summer Program directing arts and crafts. In 1996, after many years of active service, Sister Josephine retired to Blue Point where she continued a ministry of prayer.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated January 6 at the St. Ursula Center Chapel here, followed by interment at the cemetery of the Ursuline Sisters here. She is survived by two sisters and several nieces and nephews.
