CYO scholarships awarded
By Mary Gorry Staff Reporter

Catholic Youth Organization of Nassau and Suffolk Counties (CYO) has awarded scholarships this year to help 10 young athletes attend college or a Catholic high school.

More than 24,000 young people on Long Island between the ages of six and 18 play sports on CYO teams in Nassau and Suffolk. The scholarships are awarded each year to qualifying eighth-graders who will be entering a Catholic high school in the fall and to high school seniors who will be entering college in September. The winners and their parents were invited to an awards celebration dinner at Peppercorn’s Restaurant in Hicksville May 1.

“The CYO scholarship awards were instituted three years ago as a way to single out individuals and to help them and their families in a very tangible way,” explained Frank Seely, executive director of CYO of Nassau and Suffolk. “The awards are not need-based nor are they granted on the basis of scholastic or athletic accomplishments. Rather, they are awarded on the basis of how CYO has helped shape the person you are.”

The scholarship review committee selects winners based upon an application detailing involvement in parish, community and school service activities and an essay describing how CYO has impacted his or her life.

This year’s eighth-grade winners are Nicholas Anding, a student at St. Martin of Tours in Amityville who will be attending Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale; Patrick McCormack, a student at St. Raymond’s in East Rockaway, who will be attending Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville; Madeline Morr, a student at Our Lady of Lourdes in Malverne, who will be attending Kellenberg; Meagan O’Connell, a student at Holy Angels Regional School in Patchogue, who will be attending Kellenberg; and Ryan Sakowich, a student at Notre Dame in New Hyde Park, who will be attending Chaminade.

This year’s senior winners are Paul Cunningham, Holy Trinity; Thomas Day, Kellenberg; Kimberly Kostelee, St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset; Kerry McCabe, Massapequa High School; and Morgan Rubanow, Hicksville High School.
