They share experiences with a surrogate family, thousands of miles away from their actual families. It’s all in a day’s work for a Lasallian volunteer working with the De La Salle Christian Brothers.

Polar Bear Plunge for Hunger

Hundreds of hardy souls braved sub-freezing wind chill temperatures on Dec. 15 to take a morning dip in the Atlantic Ocean to benefit an interfaith community outreach program based at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, Southampton. Men, women and children of all ages gathered at Cooper’s Beach in Southampton to participate in the fourth annual Polar Bear Plunge for Hunger, a popular fundraiser for Human Resources of the Hamptons, a non-profit organization that assists people in need. ‘Now I want to help my dad ...’

Throughout my entire life, one man has stood out as a major faith inspiration to me. That man is my dad. He was the one who taught me my first prayer; I remember it vividly, him teaching me the Our Father when I was only in kindergarten. He was an altar server as a child and has always kept that close connection to the Lord.

Beginning after the new year, Msgr.
Francis Maniscalco will offer a monthly Question and Answer
column in TLIC designed to respond to inquiries from readers
about Church teachings, practices and various aspects of the
Catholic faith. Currently director of the diocesan Respect
Life Office, Msgr. Maniscalco is a former editor of The Long
Island Catholic and former director of communications for
the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
