Bishop Murphy to undergo surgery December 6
On Thursday morning, Dec. 6, Bishop William Murphy will undergo a surgical procedure at Mercy Medical Center to remove two discs pressing on a nerve that have limited the use of and caused pain in his right arm. He expects to make a full recovery following several days of post-surgical recuperation in the hospital and a regimen of physical therapy. Full Story

Father Corali: ‘I have always been happy being a priest’

Uniondale — When he was growing up in a village in Italy, Father Serafino Corali recalls, his mother prayed for a son to become a priest.

“But it wasn’t me. It was my older brother,” Father Corali said. The son of a factory worker and one of six children growing up in Bergamo, Italy, Father Corali said his older brother was involved in the Church but found a job in Switzerland and moved there.

Parish extends warm welcome to Korean community

Woodbury — Gray skies and snow flurries couldn’t put a damper on the festive mood as the Korean Catholic Apostolate of the Diocese of Rockville Centre gathered to celebrate moving to their new home at Holy Name of Jesus Church here. Worshippers coming in from the snow for the noon Mass on Dec. 2 were warmly greeted by women clad in beautifully colored traditional Korean dress.   Full Story

In an effort to encourage families to focus on the true meaning of Christmas this month, St. Thomas the Apostle Church, West Hempstead, invited parishioners to bring statues of the infant Jesus from their Nativity sets to the Dec. 2 family Mass, during which the figurines would be blessed by Msgr. Bishop Murphy elected chair of USCCB Domestic Policy Committee
 
Rockville Centre — Bishop William Murphy has been elected to a three-year term as chairman of the Domestic Policy Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The election occurred Nov. 15 during the bishops’ general meeting in Baltimore. Bishop Murphy will succeed Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn.  Full Story

Beginning after the new year, Msgr. Francis Maniscalco will offer a monthly Question and Answer column in TLIC designed to respond to inquiries from readers about Church teachings, practices and various aspects of the Catholic faith. Currently director of the diocesan Respect Life Office, Msgr. Maniscalco is a former editor of The Long Island Catholic and former director of communications for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Diocese organizing March for Life pilgrimages for young Catholics

The diocese will coordinate two special pilgrimage groups for young Catholics to attend the 35th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. Jan. 21-22. The diocesan youth ministry apostolate will conduct a trip for teens, while the young adult apostolate will organize a group of young adults.
