Four marks of the Church
Bishops: martyrs and saints should inspire and challenge
today's faithfulBy Rick
Hinshaw
TLIC Editor |
|
Rome — Preaching in turn at each of
the four major basilicas in Rome, Bishops William Murphy,
John Dunne, Paul Walsh and Peter Libasci sounded a common
theme: that this 50th anniversary diocesan pilgrimage was
not merely a celebration of the rich history of the Catholic
Church, but a challenge and an opportunity — for the
pilgrims and the entire Diocese of Rockville Centre — to
take inspiration from the martyrs and saints whose stories
they were experiencing, and to strive to emulate them by
living lives of service to God and to their fellow human
beings.

From whence they came
By Rick Hinshaw
TLIC Editor |
|
Rome — Some were seasoned veterans
who had been here before. For others it was to be a
once-in-a-lifetime experience. Some came to celebrate,
others to seek comfort; some to pray for family, friends or
a special intention, others just to give thanks.
It was a diverse group of 130 pilgrims who came here to
commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Diocese of Rockville
Centre.

‘A taste of heaven’ By Rick
Hinshaw
TLIC Editor |
|
Rome — Over seven days here in the
Eternal City, 130 pilgrims from Long Island celebrated the
50th anniversary of the Diocese of Rockville Centre by
experiencing firsthand the rich history of the Church, and
by trying to discern the meaning of that history for their
faith lives and the life of the Church in the 21st century.
A highlight of Tuesday morning’s visit to St. Mary Major
Basilica was the chance to view a relic of the actual crib
of the infant Jesus.

Father Capodanno’s cause for sainthood
By Mary Iapalucci
Staff Reporter |
|
South Huntington — It was just over 40 years ago when
Father Vincent Capodanno was killed on the battlefield in
Vietnam. On that day, retired U.S. Marine John Scafidi was
close to the age of the football players from St. Anthony’s
High School who now listened attentively as he recalled
crouching in a foxhole and hearing the machine gun fire
which would eventually take Father Capodanno’s life on Sept.
4, 1967.

‘I believe in miracles’
By Matthew Borkowski |
|
Growing up, the best word to describe my faith was
imitation. As a child, I had no concept of what it meant to
be a Catholic. My parents were Catholic, so I was Catholic.
I went to church because it was expected of me by my
parents.
