Bishop will join with diocesan youth going
to WYD 2008

Rockville Centre — When more than 200 young people
from the Diocese of Rockville Centre journey to World Youth
Day in Sydney, Australia next year, Bishop William Murphy
will accompany them on their pilgrimage. Many of them have
already started fundraising for the trip, where they will
join hundreds of thousands of young adults from around the
world to celebrate with Pope Benedict what it means to be
young and Catholic.

Cardinal Lustiger, Jewish-born leader of
dialogue, dies

Vatican City (CNS) — Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger,
the Jewish-born former archbishop of Paris who defended
the right of believers to have a say in public debates,
died at the age of 80.
He had been the voice of French Catholics for nearly a
quarter-century and spoke out against anti-Semitism, as
well as promoted Catholic dialogue with Jews and with
the nation’s growing Muslim community.

An old tradition is renewed with ‘Blessing
of Cars’

Baldwin — From the 1920s to the late 60s on the Sunday
closest to the Feast of St. Christopher, cars would line up
in front of the Church of St. Christopher here for the
“Blessing of the Cars.” Father Steven Camp, pastor of St.
Christopher’s, was asked by parishioners if this tradition

‘False idols’ work against life, Cardinal
Rigali tells Catholic pro-life leaders

Arlington, Va. (CNS) — Like the Israelites who
idolized the golden calf, the pro-life movement is
challenged today by “the idolatrous gospel of total
autonomy, sheer utility and false mercy,” Cardinal Justin
Rigali of Philadelphia told a gathering in Arlington Aug. 2.
The cardinal, who chairs the U.S. bishops’ Committee on
Pro-Life Activities, spoke on the opening day of the Aug.
2-4 annual conference of directors of diocesan pro-life
offices and state Catholic conferences, sponsored by the
bishops’ pro-life secretariat.
