After 65 years, Father Charest still displays a passion for his vocation

Bay Shore — When he was 13, Roger Charest left his home in Fall River, Mass., and began his studies at the Montfort Missionaries’ preparatory seminary here.

“I always knew I wanted to be a priest,” recalls Montfort Missionary Father Roger Charest, who earlier this year celebrated his 65th anniversary as a priest.

Selection of hymns: ‘giving people something to sing about’

Huntington — When Chris Ferraro is selecting hymns for a Mass, “it’s not about what I feel like singing,” or his favorite hymns.

“In the Middle Ages, the stained-glass windows were the catechism for many of the people who couldn’t read. They taught the faith,” said the pastoral associate and music director at Christ the King Church in Commack.

Our Parishes
Holy Name of Jesus Church, Woodbury
 

During its fifth anniversary celebration in 1962, the Diocese of Rockville Centre created five parishes to accommodate population spurts in several areas across Long Island. Holy Name of Jesus was one of two new faith communities in Nassau County, along with St. Paul the Apostle, Brookville. At Holy Name of Jesus, worshippers gathered for Sunday Mass in the Syosset Theatre for three years until the present church, which includes a lower hall, was dedicated in 1965.

— The new council of the Dominican Sisters of Amityville assumed office during a Mass celebrated in the Amityville motherhouse June 24 and attended by more than 500 Sisters, families and friends. The new council, which will serve until June 2013, includes (from left to right): Sister Elizabeth McGarvey, councilor for health and retirement; Sister Theresa Gallagher, councilor for stewardship/treasurer; Sister Mary Hughes, prioress; Sister Elaine Jahrsdoerfer, assistant prioress; Sister Judith Golden, councilor for common life; Sister Alice Byrnes, councilor for ministry/study.
