Singers from 18 parishes perform in Adult Honors Choir concert

Eighty choral singers from 18 diocesan parishes combined their voices to perform in concert at St. Agnes Cathedral, Rockville Centre, on Sunday, June 17. The Adult Honors Choir Festival Concert featured a selection of liturgical hymns and also included the world premier of “Panis Angelicus” by composer David Meoli, a member of the St. Agnes Men’s and Boys’ Choir.

Priests, Sisters inspired Father Minturn to pursue his priestly vocation

Manhasset — While growing up in St. Mary’s Church here, Father Joseph Minturn recalls, the thought of the priesthood came to him early.

“I suppose it was when my father would take me to Mass,” said the now-retired priest and pastor. “I was also inspired by the priests of my parish and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters in the school.”

Our Parishes
St. Louis de Montfort Church, Sound Beach
 

Located on Suffolk County’s North Shore, St. Louis de Montfort was founded by the Montfort Fathers in 1948, initially serving as a mission of Infant Jesus Church, Port Jefferson, before receiving parish status in 1971. Mass was first celebrated at a community house, then at a tavern, before being moved to a white wood-framed church in 1952. In subsequent years, a large tent was pitched outside the church to accommodate the expanding congregation.

Maritime College cadets at papal audience     
 

Cadets from SUNY Maritime College in Fort Schuyler who are spending their summer term aboard the training ship Empire State VI attended the regular audience of Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday, June 6. The ship, which departed on May 14, will return on July 13.

Pope’s new book, Jesus of Nazareth, centers on ‘real’ Jesus of faith

John Meier, New Testament scholar at Notre Dame and priest of the Archdiocese of New York, has completed three volumes about Jesus entitled “A Marginal Jew” and is working on the fourth. Father Meier begins this massive project by making a distinction between the “historical” Jesus and the “real” Jesus.

Chicago (CNS) — The 13 men who gathered around a table in St. Vincent Hall in Chicago ranged in age from 16 to nearly 60. They were mostly black, with a couple of Latinos, married and single, and their experiences ran the gamut from a small business owner to those recently released from prison to those still in high school.

Virginia Tech shooting victim left behind message of forgiveness

Arlington, Va. (CNS) — Mary Karen Read, a 19-year-old victim of the shootings at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, aspired to be a teacher. Now she is posthumously teaching a lesson of forgiveness in the aftermath of the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history.

Cardinal Keeler has surgery for fluid on brain

(CNS)

Baltimore (CNS) — Auxiliary Bishop W. Francis Malooly told the Baltimore Sun late Monday afternoon that Cardinal William H. Keeler’s surgery for fluid on his brain was a success. The surgery, performed at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, began at 12:30 p.m. and Cardinal Keeler was out of the operating room by just after 2 p.m.
