Message to the diocese from Bishop William Murphy

The verdict in the Matthew Maiello suit this past week culminates a difficult and painful process for those involved. In a special letter to the people of the diocese, Bishop Murphy reminds us all of the pain caused by the crime of sexual abuse of minors. He also explains the diocese’s decision not to appeal the findings.

The ordination Mass for Auxiliary Bishop Peter Libasci will be celebrated on Friday, June 1,
at St. Agnes Cathedral,
beginning at 2 p.m.

Three men to be ordained June 9

They came from different walks of life — a businessman, a teacher, a college recruiter — but Edward Sheridan, Joseph Fitzgerald, and Lee Descoteaux, seminarians at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, will all answer the call to the priesthood when Bishop William Murphy ordains them as priests for the Rockville Centre Diocese at St. Agnes Cathedral June 9.

Msgr. Trench had two options but happily chose priesthood

Rockville Centre — When he was growing up in Rockville Centre, Msgr. Edmond Trench wanted to be a fireman and a priest.

“I grew up across the street from the firehouse. When I was 16, I started hanging around there,” said Msgr. Trench, now pastor emeritus of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, Southampton.

Brooklyn — At the Catholic Media Convention here last week, communications professionals from The Long Island Catholic and Telecare were honored by their peers in the Catholic media. Msgr. Tom Hartman received an award for lifetime achievement.

Pilgrimage practice

In preparation for the National Association of Pastoral Musicians pilgrimage to Rome in November, singers and musicians from the diocese gathered at the Church of St. Elizabeth in Melville on Sunday, May 20, for a festival of choirs entitled “Prelude to Rome.” Musical selections were chosen from all seasons of the liturgical year.
