Message to the diocese from Bishop William Murphy

The verdict in the Matthew Maiello suit this past week culminates a difficult and painful process for those involved. In a special letter to the people of the diocese, Bishop Murphy reminds us all of the pain caused by the crime of sexual abuse of minors. He also explains the diocese’s decision not to appeal the findings.

Haitian Flag Day celebration

Two hundred fifty Catholics of Haitian ancestry gathered at St. Agnes Parish Center, Rockville Centre, May 20 to celebrate their heritage and faith during a festive observance of Haitian Flag Day, which falls annually on May 18.

New pastors named  
 

Rockville Centre — Bishop William Murphy has confirmed the appointment of several new pastors, and has also announced that Msgr. Brian McNamara will succeed Msgr. Robert Guglielmone as director of clergy personnel for the diocese. Msgr. Guglielmone will become the rector of St. Agnes Cathedral.

Tickets available

Two major celebrations are coming up in our diocese, and tickets are available for both:
• The ordination Mass for Auxiliary Bishop Peter Libasci will be held on Friday, June 1, at St. Agnes Cathedral, beginning at 2 p.m. Anyone wishing tickets to this event should contact the diocesan Office of Communications at 678-5800 ext. 625.
• On Sunday, June 3, the Diocese of Rockville Centre will celebrate our 50th Anniversary with an Anniversary Mass at St. Agnes Cathedral beginning at 3 p.m. Tickets can be obtained by contacting your parish.

Father Arnao chose priesthood when deciding how he could help heal

Rockville Centre — When he was a senior at St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary, Uniondale, Father Thomas Arnao recalls, he had to make a decision.

Though he had been going to St. Pius with the intention of becoming a priest, “I considered other things. I was drawn to medicine,” and he was accepted in pre-medical studies at Georgetown University in Washington.
