Huntington — When Dr. Robert Scanlon, a Huntington obstetrician, first saw the plight of African mothers and their babies, “it was overwhelming.” On a trip to Ghana, he saw that “there was so much need. So many people were poor and living in remote villages without electricity and water” for health care facilities.

Our parishes: St. Pius X

The parish of St. Pius X, located in eastern Nassau County, was founded in 1955. Its church, dedicated October 28, 1956, has a longer history. Originally a World War I hut, it later became the parish church of St. Mel’s in Flushing.

Catholic Health Services helps Nigerian priest with surgery

Port Jefferson Station — In recent years, priests from Nigeria and other foreign countries have been helping to fill the diocese’s need for hospital chaplains. There are currently 14 Nigerian priests serving in hospital ministry here, according to Cathy Grandjean, director of chaplaincy for Catholic Health Services.
