Divine Mercy Sunday

Divine Mercy Sunday — Despite the weather on Sunday, St. Raymond’s in East Rockaway had a good crowd for the Divine Mercy Sunday devotions. According to Msgr. Bill Jablonski, pastor at St. Raymond’s, this is one of the first collaborative events of the Five Towns Deanery parishes, who decided to combine efforts on Divine Mercy Sunday in honor of the 50th anniversary of the diocese. The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy is a prayer derived from the writings of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun who died in 1938 and was canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II.

Hundreds of people gathered in Gizo at the only intact wharf to welcome the cross. Led by pan pipers and dancers, the cross then processed to the cathedral, which has become a symbol of “people and places badly damaged but not destroyed.” (TLIC photos by Father Ambrose Pereira, Catholic Communications in the Solomons)
