Tomorrow’s Hope offering over $1M in scholarships

Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation will award more than $1 million in scholarships to help children attend Catholic elementary schools. For help navigating the scholarship application process, parents can attend one of five seminars scheduled around the diocese during the next week.

The foundation, which supports Catholic education in the Rockville Centre Diocese through donations, will offer scholarships ranging in size from $750 to $2,000, depending on need.

Tomorrow’s Hope, the diocesan Education Department, the Private School Aid Service (PSAS), and volunteers from Catholic schools around the diocese have worked together to organize these seminars, said Kathy Brand, director of Tomorrow’s Hope.

“A representative from PSAS had training sessions with volunteers last month to prepare them to help parents who will be applying for financial aid,” Brand explained.

Based near Cleveland, Ohio, PSAS specializes in need analysis for private schools. Tomorrow’s Hope has contracted with PSAS to verify scholarship applications.

“We have budgeted $1.25 million for scholarships this year” for children in Catholic schools in kindergarten through eighth grade, Brand said, but the amount of scholarship aid given may exceed that total. “We are planning to meet the need.”

The seminars will help parents understand the application process. It requires full disclosure of their financial resources, including income, savings, and investments, she noted. The application also requires documentation of financial responsibilities, including mortgages, medical bills, tuition, childcare expenses, and special circumstances, including job loss.

“We encourage parents who are sending their children to Catholic schools or are thinking about sending their children to Catholic schools and might qualify for assistance” to apply for scholarships, said Ursuline Sister Joanne Callahan, diocesan superintendent of schools.
