Bishops from U.S., Canada, Latin America meet at seminary

Huntington — The diocese’s Seminary of the Immaculate Conception here was host last week to a delegation of bishops from all of the Americas. The visiting bishops also attended a parish Mass at St. Patrick’s Church here.

‘Teen Freedom’ at McGann Mercy H.S.

Riverhead — The blanket on the floor of the classroom representing the “marriage bed” was crowded with students in one of the religion classes at McGann-Mercy High School here Feb. 14. Except for the “married couple,” each student represented part of a web of past sexual experiences. The demonstration on the physical and emotional baggage brought into a marriage by premarital sex was part of the two-week L.I. Teen Freedom program.

Thousands gather at Lourdes on 150th anniversary of Marian apparitions

Lourdes, France (CNS) — Tens of thousands of pilgrims thronged the streets here February 11 as they participated in Jubilee Way, a special pilgrimage commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Blessed Mother’s appearances to St. Bernadette Soubirous.

Pope waives waiting period for Sister Lucia’s beatification process

Vatican City (Zenit) — Pope Benedict XVI announced he will dispense with the five-year waiting period established by Canon Law to open the cause of beatification of Sister Lucia, one of the three Fatima visionaries.
The news was announced February 13 in the cathedral of Coimbra, Portugal, by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes, on the third anniversary of the Carmelite’s death.

God ‘raising an army of men’ to help spread the faith

Dix Hills — Men need the Church, and the Church needs men.
That was the message that came through during a gathering of 50 Catholic men at St. Matthew’s Church here Feb. 7 — men who have grown in their faith through men’s prayer groups, and who are hoping to encourage other men to similarly embrace their faith through such spiritual fellowship.
