Church of St. Christopher, Baldwin
|

St. Christopher’s was a mission of Our Holy Redeemer
Church in Freeport for three years before being designated a
parish in 1915 by Bishop Charles E. McDonnell of Brooklyn.
At the recommendation of the bishop, who enjoyed leisurely
drives across Long Island, the parish was named for the
patron of travelers, due to its location at the western end
of Merrick Road, then the major roadway used by motorists
traveling along the South Shore.

Emerald Association
donation
Following the Jan. 21 Mass opening the
diocese’s 50th anniversary celebration, Bishop William
Murphy received a check for $10,000 from the Emerald
Association of Long Island. The donation, proceeds from
last year’s Emerald Ball, will benefit Catholic
Charities’ Teaching Family Home Program. Bishop Murphy
joins (from left) Laura Cassell, CEO of diocesan
Catholic Charities, and Emerald Association officers
Michael Walsh, Marguerite Peck and Gerry Griffin at the
presentation. This year’s Emerald Ball is scheduled for
Feb. 24.
