On Sunday, April 20, 2008, His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI will celebrate a Solemn Pontifical Mass at Yankee Stadium sometime in the afternoon. Our diocese has been given a limited number of tickets to distribute to the faithful. They will be appointed by lottery. For more information and to find a ticket application form, go to the diocesan Web site at www.drvc.org. The deadline for the submission of the application is January 31, 2008.

Thousands march for life in Washington

Washington, D.C. — The streets and the National Mall were flooded with people Jan. 22 for the 35th annual March for Life, and many of them were young — young people in school uniforms and in matching caps and T-shirts, young people holding signs and banners, young people bubbling with excitement for the pro-life cause despite the freezing cold.

Lenten fast: Exercise to build moral and spiritual muscle

When Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Catholics are called to enter a period of conversion in preparation for Easter. During this time, Catholics are obligated to fast — to limit oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals — and to abstain — refrain from eating meat.

2008 Lenten regulations

1. Fast and Abstinence
All Catholics who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Governor Spitzer drops school tax deduction from budget

Advocates of aid to parents of nonpublic school students are disappointed that Gov. Eliot Spitzer did not include a proposed tax deduction for school tuition in his new budget last week but were hopeful that the proposal could be restored.

The Diocesan Union of Holy Name Societies of Rockville Centre honored the winners of its Christmas poster contest at an awards event Jan. 13 at SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish, Deer Park. The theme of the 2007 contest was “Christmas is Jesus’ Birthday.”

Soup Kitchen Volunteering
St. Hugh of Lincoln Church, Huntington Station, was the venue for an interfaith prayer service Jan. 20 sponsored by MICAH (Mobilized Interfaith Coalition Against Hunger). The event was held on the eve of the national observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and focused on the slain civil rights leader’s fight for economic justice. Here, the Rev. A recent survey conducted by Hardwick-Day showed that 96 percent of Catholic college and university graduates felt the loans and personal investment they made toward their education was a good investment.

I believe that God’s love is everlasting. God’s love never ends even when we think life is unfair to us. In the Bible He is constantly making covenants with man like in the story of Noah’s Ark. After God made a flood destroying all the sinners, He said He would never do it again no matter how badly we disappoint him.

Mother 'has always been my rock'
