profiles

This week TLIC continues profiling those honored with the first annual St. Agnes Medal of Service, awarded by Bishop Murphy to representatives from each parish, as well as four diocesan representatives, during a ceremony at St. Agnes Cathedral, Rockville Centre on Friday, Sept. 14.

John Abele, St. Patrick, Southold.

John Abele has been a strong force in St. Patrick's for many years. In earlier days he taught in the religious education program. He currently heads the parish's prayer group and for many years has been an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. A trustee for nine years, he now heads the parish finance committee, and for many years he has almost single-handedly run the parish sweepstakes, St. Patrick's major fundraising activity.

Josephine Sadowski, St. Ladislaus, Hempstead.

A parishioner at St. Ladislaus since birth, Josephine Sadowski assists the pastor, Msgr. Edward Wawerski, as parish secretary. She coordinates the parish's Catholic Ministries Appeal, keeps its Long Island Catholic subscription list up to date, records parishioners’ weekly donations and final reports, and prints the weekly bulletin. Josephine has coordinated St. Ladislaus' parish carnival for the past 18 years, and also coordinated the parish's "250 Club." She is a Polish interpreter who assists those in the parish with language problems. She is also a member of the Rosary Society, and participates in diocesan programs as well.
