This week TLIC continues profiling those honored with the first annual St. Agnes Medal of Service, awarded by Bishop Murphy to representatives from each parish, as well as four diocesan representatives, during a ceremony at St. Agnes Cathedral, Rockville Centre on Friday, Sept. 14.

Owen and Veronica Tierney, St. Anthony of Padua, East Northport.

"Veronica and Owen Tierney are longtime members of St. Anthony's parish," writes pastor Msgr. John Dreasen. "During that time Owen has chaired the Catholic Ministries Appeal (and formerly the Bishop's Annual Appeal) with great dedication and resulting success." He is also treasurer of the parish St. Vincent de Paul Society, a member of the parish finance committee, and a parish trustee. Veronica "serves as a receptionist at the rectory," Msgr. Dreasen writes, "as well as in her generous role as wife, mother and grandmother."

Al Barbarino, St. Raymond, East Rockaway.

"Al is a gentleman of great faith and talent who does not hesitate to use every opportunity to bring the message of Christ's love and His Church to wherever he can" -- and that includes "parishes throughout the United States and abroad, including England, France, Italy, Canada, Philippines, Australia and New Zealand," St. Raymond's pastor Msgr. William Jablonski wrote in the parish bulletin. Al, the pastor explained, "has spent the last decade using his time and talent of music and spiritual insight" on behalf of the parish and the wider Church, "especially to support the work of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in their centers in Harlem and relief for refugees in Bosnia." He has recorded seven albums of spiritual songs and produced a video, "The Message." He travels to parishes throughout the country and the world, sharing his spiritual insights and offering his music to raise funds for the work of the Franciscan Friars. He has visited 75 parishes in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Msgr. Jablonski notes, "so that his face and voice is a familiar one across Long Island." "Countless numbers of listeners have used his tapes to broaden their spiritual perspective and to be consoled and guided in difficult moments," the pastor added. Besides a busy schedule of evenings of reflection, spiritual conferences to parish organizations, and healing Masses, "when on the scene here in East Rockaway, he is both a cantor and a member of our distinguished choir." With "his wonderful and supportive wife Maryanne," Msgr. Jablonski concluded, "Al Barbarino exemplifies the spirit of service of St. Raymond's parish."

Albert Peterson, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Patchogue.

Albert Peterson serves his parish in a wide variety of ways. He volunteers in sacrament and worship ministries as an usher, an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, and, with his wife Mary, is an active member of the baptismal preparation team. He works on many fundraising projects, having for decades served as a member in charge of three separate bingo games in the parish, and dedicated his time at craft fairs, yard sales, Chinese auctions, and many other parish money-raising events. He also helps at the Holy Angels Regional School's book bingo that is held semi-annually at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. And he spends time making small repairs to parish facilities in order to save the parish money. Albert and Mary have nine children, and their commitment to serving the Church is reflected in their children now also becoming lectors, catechists, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and parish volunteers.

Mary Webb, St. Joseph, Ronkonkoma.

"Mary is selfless," writes her pastor, Father Michael Maffeo, "always looking out and acting for others -- not just here at the parish but in her daily routine.” She serves as a lector at the daily 7 a.m. Mass, sings in the choir on Sundays, and "has taken care of the sick and the homeless of the parish, opening her door and heart to them," Msgr. Maffeo adds. "At 81 years of age Mary continues as an inspiration to all of us."
